Rail4You C-Sine Like
Motors
In this paper we will discuss the
Rail4You C-Sine motors and their respective drivers. We will
evaluate various manufacturer's locomotives. The candidates are:
- A Märklin locomotive
retrofitted with the Rail4You
motor
- A HAG locomotive retrofitted with the
Rail4You motor
- An older Fleischmann locomotive retrofitted with the
Rail4You motor
- A Märklin C-Sine Locomotive
retrofitted with the Rail4You
C-Sine driver and a DCC decoder
Lets
discuss the motor and its very modular construction. These motors are
identical to the renown Märklin C-Sine
motors. In fact the interface and construction are
almost identical. The servo motor has
9 drive coils just like its Märklin counterpart.
Even the flex connector strip is also identical. The motor
is fully self contained in the central rotor itself.. Take a look at the
images and you will see all the bulk around it is actually the bezel
that is specific to the type of manufacturer's motor mounting specs. The
motor is all solid cast
brass
with minor manual machining. They are definitely manually machined but
never the less very finely crafted. Care must be taken
when handling
the flex circuit connector. If damaged may mean a new motor (very
expensive). The bezels are what make it specific to the type of model it
will mate with. Three screws are all that are needed to dismantle the
rotor/armature from the the bezel. The complete assembly is much heavier
than the original manufacturer's motors. It might be worth while testing
these motors without drive tires on the wheels.
Lets us get back to the three of the original four candidates.
First we
will take a look at these locomotives and how their drives and motors
are constructed. The choices are (L to R) Märklin
Ae 6/6, HAG Ae 6/6, & a Fleischmann Prussian T18 (BR 78). The three
locomotives that will receive the Rail4You C-Sine motor and are similar
in the way their drive gear mechanisms are constructed. They all use
spur gear mechanisms with the
motive
power in the same direction
as the drive. The motors and the mounting specs are however very
different.
The Märklin
locomotive
has the standard 5-Pole motor from the 60904 kit. The Rail4You motor
comes with two different bezels to accommodate the different face plates
that also come with the Märklin 60904 kit.
Retrofitting the Märklin locomotive
was the easiest. No machining was required. However the motor
had
to be disassembled and remounted with the appropriate bezel (in this
case the one with the drive suspension built in.
The HAG locomotive has the classic type 88 DC motor. However the
bezel for this motor does not fit. Some minor machining on
the
motor base will have to be done to retrofit this motor.
The Fleischmann locomotive is the oddest of the three. Its motor is
round with a 3-pole armature.
The
bezel for this motor is perfectly machined to fit in the base. The brass
bushing on the base has to be removed and the bore expanded to
accommodate the new gear and rotor.
Rail4You
supplies two different types drivers. They are drivers for the Rail4You
motor and one for the Märklin C-Sine
motor. They are similar but just different enough that they cannot
be interchanged. Yes it is now possible to drive a Märklin
C-Sine motor with a DCC decoder using this driver.
